RuneScape: Dragonwilds Magic: Runes, Spells and Wands
Where runes come from, how combat magic differs from utility spells, what wands are for in 1.0, and what to prepare before a boss fight.

Magic has two lanes. One is combat magic: the Air, Fire and Water elements, plus debuffs and damage reflection.
The other is utility skill spells: chopping trees, blowing up ore, movement, and a free camera for building.
Both lanes spend runes.
Runes come from rune essence stones near geysers. You convert them at a rune altar or an elemental vent.
Also, 1.0 added wands. They feel more mobile and faster to cast.
Where runes come from
- Mine rune essence. Use a pickaxe on the rune essence stones around geysers.
- Some stones float. Knock them down with an arrow or a staff first, then mine them.
- Unlock the rune altar. The first time you collect rune essence, the Rune Altar station unlocks.
- Craft runes, or siphon them. Craft what you need at the altar, or siphon straight from an elemental vent on the map. Vents mean you do not need your own altar.
- Slot the spell before you leave. Unlocking a spell is not enough. It has to go into your quick wheel, and you have to carry the runes. This is the step new players most often miss.
There are seven rune types: Air, Water, Fire, Earth, Nature, Astral and Law.
Spells consume different combinations. Astral Projection costs 5 Astral and 10 Air. Home Teleport costs 15 Law.
Combat magic versus utility spells
| Type | Examples | Where you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental combat magic | Air, Fire and Water attack spells | Damage, with knockdown, burn and slow effects |
| Debuffs and reflection | Enfeeble, Vengeance | Boss fights and elite mobs |
| Rune economy | Runic Refund | 30% chance to spend no runes on a cast |
| Gathering spells | Astral Projection, Rock Explosion | Chopping trees, breaking ore |
| Movement and building | Wind Step, Eye of Oculus | Raid puzzles, traversal, building camera |
Staves versus wands
- Staves favour standing and casting. Higher damage per hit.
- Wands, added in 1.0, favour mobility. Faster casting, slightly lower damage per hit, and they still stack knockdown, burn and slow.
The choice is straightforward. Moving targets, or a swarm of small mobs: take a wand. A boss with readable mechanics you can stand against: take a staff.
Jagex also says the ranged line will keep getting attention before the Luminance update, so ranged and magic balance is still moving.
Preparing for a boss fight
Jagex recommends brewing defensive potions in a cauldron, because the 1.0 elite mobs apply poison, burn, shock and wither.
Three more things before you head out.
- Top up food and clean water so you have healing during the fight.
- Make sure your rune stock covers a full raid segment.
- Bring repair materials or a repair bench. Weapon durability runs out in long raids.
Community complaints and the 1.0 response
During Early Access, criticism clustered on two points.
One: ranged and magic combat felt less finished than melee. Two: the spell wheel interrupted the flow of combat.
Those are player and media impressions from that period, not official statements.
The 1.0 response strengthens the magic line and adds options: wands, Runic Refund, Enfeeble and Vengeance. Enchant Weapon lasts five minutes now, Tempest Shield has a 45-second base cooldown, and some spells can be cast while moving.
Limits
- Jagex has not published exact spell damage. This page does not quote numbers.
- The full rune list lives at the in-game rune altar. This page lists the seven confirmed types.
- Potion recipes are incomplete, so this page covers their purpose and the station that makes them.
