Short answer: it is not a dead game, but peak numbers do not describe today either.

On the Steam metric, roughly 15,000 players were online when we checked. The 24-hour peak was about 22,600. The all-time peak of 52,473 came in the April 2025 launch month.

That figure covers Steam only. Console, Epic and subscription players are not included, and 1.0 was exactly when console and subscription access arrived.

Jagex’s own numbers: more than 1.5 million players joined during Early Access, and sales passed one million in June 2026.

The data comes from Steam Charts, a third-party tracker rather than Valve. Figures were current as of 17 September 2026, and figures like this move all the time.

What the month-by-month trend looks like

  • April 2025 (launch month): 20,836 average, 52,473 peak. The historical high.
  • Mid to late 2025: a steep fall, then a long stretch between 1,000 and 3,000. Typical Early Access curve.
  • June 2026 (Umbral Sands update): average back to 3,960, peak 18,150.
  • July 2026: 7,158 average, the second-highest Early Access month.
  • August 2026: 3,852 average.
  • Last 30 days: 3,787.9 average, 22,604 peak.

In plain terms: the game is not a permanent chart-topper, and it is not empty either. The curve follows content updates rather than one viral spike.

Mind the framing: the 1.5 million figure is cumulative Early Access participation, not daily active players and not a current concurrent count.

Why concurrents undercount the real audience

  1. Channel coverage. Steam counts Steam. Since 1.0 the game also runs on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, the Epic Games Store and the Jagex Launcher. None of those appear in Steam Charts.
  2. Subscription players do not count. Playing through Game Pass or PS Plus generates no Steam concurrent data.
  3. Solo is a big slice. The game has a pausable solo mode, so many players never appear in a multiplayer world.
  4. Reviews are a separate signal. Steam holds 30,169 reviews in total and 24,667 in English. Those are lifetime cumulative numbers.

What this means for solo and co-op players

  • Solo: barely affected. You can pause at will and depend on nobody.
  • Co-op: what changes is how often you stumble into public worlds or find a regular group. Crossplay and invite codes, both added in 1.0, made grouping much easier than before.
